Seeing comments from people that have one of those on lemmy reminds me that not everyone here is a tech-savvy person and/or knows/cares about privacy.

I have more than 100 zigbee devices, a unifi setup, I host my own email server, I use Arch BTW, use Firefox, have been in IT since years started with 1 and until recently my daily driver was a ThinkPad x200 with libreboot (because coreboot had binary blobs) and I have not one, but 3 of these. They are cheap, convenient, sound okay and are easy to monitor for internet traffic.

But what's a decent alternative for a wifi-enabled speaker that won't pull any shenanigans?

Or is the only solution to forget about wifi and use bluetooth-only speakers?

Search for sendspin, ist an opensource protocoll for spreaker sync. I have a setup together with Musik Assistant and i can perfectly sync musik on my laptop, phone , yamaha stereo and selfbuild speaker. You can have then in the same room and enjoy the musik.

It's amazing how much open source software exists these days. I try to donate as much as I can. I'd rather support them than some company like Google.

I'll need to wrap my brain around this approach with sendspin / music assistant. But thank you, it looks very promising, and I already have a Linux server for the docker version to run in.

Yes, just use Bluetooth. Or cut the speaker off completely from internet on router level and lose some functionality. Some tools are not compatible with security/privacy.

Can't cut it from the internet, it needs it in order to play music streams.

That's the problem with stream player devices (Chromecast included), you can't isolate them and they know it. 😕

Anyway point taken, my next speaker will be Bluetooth only.

Yeah I don't want to be one of those guys, but even streaming is something I'd recommend moving away from. These days I only boy media that lets me keep an actual file that I can put on a media server and then I stream to my devices over WiFi from that.

Not to make it sound like I'm judging you at all. This is pretty new for me and it took me a few years to fully transition over.

I'm mostly done with video streaming but music discovery is still something I'm exploring. I got some good leads, just need some time to try them out.

But then there's the separate issue of devices that can act as media renderers over LAN when attached to a TV screen and/or speakers. It's not easy to find such devices that are capable, non-expensive and respect privacy.
