For an auspicious October, Hairy ~~Harmonies~~ Scareys is viewing semi-old (color -- not B&W) and somewhat spooky selections for the first three weeks (followed by a final week of silly gore and mayhem). Each week gets one vampire flick and one about other supernatural entities. Today we start with the cartoonishly gory, the morbid musing, the funny yet bitter examination of what it means to be alive: Cemetery Man (skip this if you don't like gore). We follow with the cult classic from the 70s era of Blaxploitation: Blacula! It is a historic gem with minimal gore and a classy cape on a great take of the original story. It is up to the viewer to decide if the obviously-gay-but-not-quite-announced characters are annoying stereotypes or a welcome inclusion when (like black people in general) so few were on screen.

Cemetery Man (1994) DellaMorte DellAmore

1:43:22, English with optional English subtitles
Director: Michele Soavi, Writers: Tiziano Sclavi, Gianni Romoli

A cemetery man must kill the dead a second time when they become 'returners'.

*Note: Originally filmed in Italian and also released in English, we will be viewing the English version (since it is the language of the lead actor, Rupert Everett).

from Movie Jawn:

Michele Soavi’s Cemetery Man (1994) combines the grotesque, the sultry, and the existential with a modern beat that could only have come to fruition in the ‘90s. A frequent collaborator with Dario Argento, Soavi’s odd-ball gothic romance is a “B-movie” that deserves to be remembered. In many ways, it plays out like a meeting of the minds: Hartley, Scorscese, Fellini…Henson? The labyrinth of Cemetery Man is unafraid to borrow and reference, and, in doing so, it bends genre conventions to create something rather refreshing.

Blacula (1972)

1:33:10, English with optional English subtitles
Director: William Crain, Featuring: William Marshall, Denise Nicholas

Los Angeles decorators buy the coffin of an African prince bitten by Dracula centuries before.

From Every 70s movie

For a few funky years in the early ’70s, the blaxploitation genre was so popular that it produced subgenres including a string of campy horror movies whose titles were urbanized puns on the names of classic monsters. The first and best of these flicks is Blacula. Starring Shakespearean actor William Marshall, whose elegant bearing and resonant voice class up the inherently trashy surroundings, Blacula transposes tropes from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula into a modern African-American milieu.
