A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Y'all, what causes a haunting isn't fully known, but it very obviously (to anyone that pays attention to these things) involves a combination of factors.

Typically, more than one factor needs to be involved:

Someone dies violently.

Someone dies that lived a shitty love and is afraid of final judgment.

Someone died with unfinished, urgent or important business.

A location where someone did a lot of work that they used to identify themselves.

Replay hauntings seem to be placed where someone experienced a prolonged stressful situation in that location. That be be someone haunting a place that died elsewhere.

Places where both mental health issues and stress were left to simmer for years.

Someone fucked around with a oiuja/spirit board a lot in a place.

Water or stone, especially both, plus a prolonged stress factor.

Some hauntings seen to only manifest when certain people are in the space. Especially poltergeists.

There's no one way to get a haunting. Much of it depends on severe emotional states. Otherwise it would be a repeatable process. But, like it or not, it does seem to be something that humanity has experienced since we learned how to error down what was going on.

I've been trying to get some stuff done at work on our infrastructure, and during the day there's just too much going on with people getting in my way. So, I thought I'll go in during the night shift and do some work when not as many people are around.

I'm in there at 11:00 p.m. running stuff. I'm on the scissor lift working on access points. I have my headphones in and can't hear anything. I look over and one of the signs that denote a location for the scan guns is rocking back and forth like crazy.

That's kind of weird, and I'm looking at all the other signs and not one of them is moving. There's no vibrations or anything, there's no air moving back there at all, and yet this sign is just a-rocking. So, I just look at the sign and say, "Stop that, it's distracting," and it stops.

Now that whatever it is knows that I know it exists, it's trying to make me notice it even more. I'm hearing noises and all this other stuff that I haven't noticed for weeks having worked there at night. I'm not scared, more like weirded out about the whole situation, and I've come to just talk to it now. That calms it down, I guess. I'm trying to see if I can just get a radio that plays in this back corner where everyone seems to avoid at all costs, and I was only there because I needed to be. So, I'm going to see what playing music does to the distractions.

I can't say that I was a believer before, but I'm a believer now.

This is so cool. I'd keep a video camera running at all times. If I determined they weren't dangerous, I'd be doing so many experiments, like smoothing out some sawdust or powder, and seeing if they can write in it. Or various musical instruments, to see if they can make a sound. Can they interact with electronics? Have you brought any animals over, like a dog or a cat? Or a baby or toddler?

It would probably fall in love with me, and follow me for the rest of my life, scaring away anyone who got too close to me.

Sound doesn't always work. For real, try spritzing some lavender scented stuff over there. I've seen that mentioned a few times as successful. YMMV I guess.
