Paper doesn't degrade nearly as fast as you’d think, especially if its just damp and you aren’t putting pressure on it causing it to tear.

I used to use single sheets of newspaper to line my veg garden as weed barrier and they lasted an entire season no problem. I stopped because it’s hard to get newspaper now, and I don’t want to use colored ink pages.

Sadly, that reminds me that the bi-weekly, independent 'current happenings'-type paper disappeared around 10yrs ago. And this is a major Midwestern city, where it used to be quite popular.
