Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

The question is too vague to give a direct answer. About growing: Yes, I want the community and entire eco system around Linux to grow. Why? That means more people using, bigger communities, more help, more developers, more money, more support by companies. That's good. However, there is a little bit dark side of this aspect too. More popular also means it will attract bad actors. But that's part of growing up.
About "making progress", I'm unsure what that actually means. What does "making no progress" in example mean? Wish your question was formulated a bit better in the body text, than this vague headline title.
