From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

spoilerI am personally against gatekeeping anything Including linux , but young naive me from 6 years ago felt this way, and I wanted to see if opinions had changed from back then

I asked this same question 6 years ago on Reddit just wanted to see if general opinion has changed now as Linux has arguably gotten way more mainstream

Edit: Progress meant 3rd party hardware and software support, innovation etc. I decided to rerun this question because of the new discourse surrounding LLM use in the kernel; the pretext being a smaller community would have easily taken a binary decision regarding the matter, for better or worse

I'd like to see more software freedom respecting OSs. No unsourced binary blobs.
