Alonso is a has-been only in the context of him being a two time champ and probably not being able to hit that high again. But let's not downplay how good he is. He's still better than at least half the grid. Just look at 2023. 2023 was a fight for the third place in the WDC and Alonso came in fourth behind Hamilton. The clock is definitely ticking but I doubt he's a has-been in the sense that he'd be the bottleneck for a winning team. If anything Aston Martin is seriously bottlenecking the potential Alonso has.
That's 4 post 40 y/o seasons ago, he's done very little since that great beginning in 2023. He's 45 now and the decline will continue. There's really no "coming back" from the aging process, he will continue to get slower and slower. Better to finally hang it up now (again) and give the seat to a deserving younger driver.
