Essentially he thinks that, because surveillance is so powerful, and because of 21st-century advancements in the military, there is no way that a socialist uprising could happen, if any at all. The news already does a good job of showing that the US has this new incredible surveillance tech!! and could send these brand new, ultra-powerful drones to bomb you!! and it's all powered by really smart algorithms that can show all your history!!. They are very opaque about how to stop it, and it seems almost like a form of state-terrorism where the US shows its most freitening new technology to the media so that the people feel helpless, thus disinclined to start groups critical of the government. It seems that there is a strain where people like my friend see changing material conditions, and interpret the change as shutting off revolutionary potential once and for all.

I really want to know what you guys think. It really feeds into a lot of Anarchist notions to just leave alone the possibility of overthrow and tend to your own garden and write poems, or Liberal notions of simply voting because nothing else could possibly work.

Your friend hasn't seen the tiger close enough to notice what it's made of. You should, when relevant, draw attention to it with historical and contemporary examples.

In fact, military logistical analysis is a pretty good way to introduce people to thinking materially. The line many people use is "I'm sure your AR15 will do a lot of good against a tank." But let's game that out. What does a tank need to exist in the field? It needs fuel, it needs to be mobile, the crew need to eat and sleep, they need to get out sometimes to piss or at least to empty the piss bottles, they need communications, they need infantry protection because otherwise the Abrams is so loud you could literally sneak up on it with a parade, and all of a sudden you're mapping out a web of logistical choke points.

When you look at each individual part of an opposing force not just in terms of what it can do but also what it needs to survive, what first looked like an impenetrable interlocking wall becomes a rough cloth that someone could begin unraveling by pulling any one of many different threads. As the situation and your analysis both progress, an ideal order of operations might even present itself.

I bring a 'kill the empire by playing youtube poops on a network of 27 bluetooth speakers set up around the sleeping quarters of the military occupying an urban center' energy that the libs really don't like

This is very very sound reasoning and I am committing this entire comment to memory as I wish I could have pulled this info out so succinctly in so many conversations with some of the more radical comrades in my community.

rat-salute top tier agitprop.

That's why military forces regularly get their ass handed to them by guerilla warfare. Although drones have changed things.

The advent of cheap, constant and replicable air surveilance does make me think about the resistance's use of tunnels in Palestine. I wonder what role sewer and storm drain systems would play in a US urban environment

I like this perspective the most! A lot of people CAN think about these things more critically and in-depth, the main thing is in letting people feel like they've figured it out on their own. The good ol' Socratic method of teaching! :) Applies to inspiring people to action just as much as it does learning a song or algebra!
