I deadass know an Australian woman who moved to the US, got permanent resident status.... then joined the national guard. She was studying education (early childhood), finished her degree, went to study more in the US, got a job teaching kindergarten and when she got her green card, she joined the US National Guard. Absolutely bonkers career trajectory.
