Dishwashers "scrub" by spraying soapy water, typically upwards. If that stream of soapy water can't make contact with the dirty sides of your dishes then you may as well just dunk your dishes into a bucket of soapy water and call it clean.

I disagree. In my personal experience. Dishwashers work better when they are well packed rather than well spaced. Important emphasize on "well packed". Obviously the water needs to be able to flow between the items and not get puddle on top of a bowl or cup. The dishwasher presented here is well packed and it will wash very well.

Half empty dishwasher will probably not be an issue and things will come out clean, but it's a little wasteful.

I'm assuming you either pre-wash your dishes, only use them for things that will come off with a light soak, or have a lower standard for clean.

Because based on my personal experience, packing this close guarantees dishes are going to come out with oily residue or crusty bits towards the top where the water jets can't reach.

No prewash, no rinsing in sink, straight to the dishwasher. Dish soap can react with dishwasher detergent and actually cause to clean less effectively or leave white streaks.

I always expect the dishes to come out perfectly clean, not oily and definitely no crusty bits !

I use also the cheapest powder detergent, the amount is important, too much is not good.

If your dishes come out oily or crusty, you should check the filter and clean it. Make sure the regenerating salt is topped up if your dishwasher uses that and the rinsing liquid topped up as well.
