I heard an interview with Mick Jagger where he said that he sounded American singing and English talking because he learned to sing by emulating American singers and picked up their pronunciation.
I once heard Ozzy Osborne answer a similar question with "Because it would sound bloody stupid if I sang in a Brummie accent".
