Neurodivergence

I'm neurodivergent. We're keeping "neurodivergent", they can't have it.

Stupid and moron aren't terms that exist outside of abelism. Some of the words we use to mean "bad" or "undesirable" are antiquated medical terms for disability or perceived deficiency (i.e. non conformance to societal expectations).

Some examples:

In 19th- and early 20th-century medicine and psychology, an "idiot" was a person with a very profound intellectual disability, being diagnosed with "idiocy". In the early 1900s, Dr. Henry H. Goddard proposed a classification system for intellectual disability based on the Binet-Simon concept of mental age. Individuals with the lowest mental age level (less than three years) were identified as idiots; imbeciles had a mental age of three to seven years, and morons had a mental age of seven to ten years.

The term dumb as a descriptor for someone lacking the ability to speak was once common, and from the early 19th century, it featured in the names of schools and advocacy organizations. In that same century, however, rejection of the term by the population it aimed to describe began, and by the end of the 20th century, the offensiveness of dumb was widely recognized. When a single term to describe someone who lacks the ability to speak is called for, the adjective mute is used instead.

Prior to Howe’s On the Causes of Idiocy (1845) people with intellectual disabilities were considered indistinguishable from one another. This was true regardless of varying degrees of impairment. Although Howe’s theory was prejudicial and incorrect, he was the first to offer a classification scheme according to severity.

According to Howe (1846), Fools were a subdivision of Idiots. Idiots had some muscular control and some cognitive functioning. This group was thought to have almost no reasoning skills and major delays in speech.

Howe’s third division was the Simpletons. This group possessed motor skills and adequate reasoning skills. They could complete daily activities with little guidance. However, they had difficulty functioning within society.

There is also the idea that criticizing the real or apparent lack of intelligence is abelist and I'm currently working through this myself so I don't really have anything to offer on it.

I'm not trying to tell you what language is okay or not, I just thought this was interesting context!
