Well it looked like one of 'em downvoted you before I saw your response. So there you have it.

The ml folk are absolutists when it comes to compromise, I admire the conviction, but the rubber doesn't quite hit the road of reality when you look at the big picture, it's fine, maybe I'm the wrong one

For us to be "absolutists" about compromise, we would first have to be offered a compromise. A compromise implies actually getting something that you want. We were given nothing, not listened to, no dialogue whatsoever, treated with contempt, not even purely symbolic gestures like allowing a Palestinian speaker at the convention. Meanwhile the Biden administration bypassed congress in order to flood Israel with weapons, while Harris did nothing to indicate she would act differently. To go along with that would not be a compromise, but total capitulation on everything we stand for, in exchange for nothing. That we are absolutely opposed to.

There may be some people who are absolutists regarding compromise, but all I can say is that those people haven't actually read theory. Even Lenin himself was highly critical of the position of "no compromises," but while making the distinction between compromise and capitulation.

But there isn't really a debate to be had about whether a compromise would have been acceptable in that situation because no compromise was ever offered to us for us to reject. Get them to give us an olive branch first, and if we reject it then you can accuse us of being absolutists.

Funny, bcs it's the Dems who are the absolutists on compromise. Never compromise with their own left flank, but compromise with fascists even when they could get everything they want without compromise.

Trust me, I get what you mean, I'm right there with you, but we're clearly not living in the world in which everything works just perfectly. I don't want genocide any more than anyone else here, I don't want compromise on it either, but if we wait around for the perfect world we aren't working towards a better one right now.

[โ€“] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Ok, so get the leaders of your party to do that compromise with their own base (actually working towards a better world) instead of expecting all the people who really are working towards a better world to constantly compromise with the greed ghouls who want to burn fossil fuels and fuck children until the planet can't support life any more.

You're mistaking me for someone who is a democrat, I'm not even American. All I'm saying is that despite the fact that we shouldn't put people who support genocide in power, it seems as if they got someone in power who not only supports genocide, but has created such a fucking mess of everything else as well.

The only good thing to come out of this is shocking people out of apathy, that's one part of the equation. The other is people who don't want a compromise, and fwiw, that's the kind of people who are going to steer any hope of bringing this ship around to sanity, status quo brought these circumstances in the first place. So keep fighting the good fight, you're not wrong to want a perfect world.

It's funny because they are like, a living museum exhibit of why communism turns out the way it so often does.
