I have disassembled and dedusted the disk drive and still get this error on an Commodore 64. Is it probable that the floppy diskettes are simply demagnetized by now? I am trying to recover some of dad's old essays and poems.
Edit: the error channel says READ ERROR
Edit2: the read head is not rusted. In fact, it looks like new. ๐
Tried both LOAD"*",8 and LOAD"$",8 on another ten or so disks, with the same file not found error.
Are you sure the drive heads are properly aligned? I don't remember the program name, but I vaguely remember loosening the stepper motor on my drive and ever so slightly moving it to get the drive heads aligned. The program included a reference disk for analyzing the alignment, so that may not be an option here.
Good question! I have opened the unit twice now, once for dedusting and once to wipe what I thought to be the "read head" with some alcohol. A litte, white, oval protuberance. Other than that, I don't really know what components could need adjustment. This says Head alignment is more sensitive and may require factory alignment disks.
I'm taking a break for now. I've had three really intensive "retro weeks" and I don't want to get fed up with it. ๐
I don't think you're supposed to use alcohol on the drive heads, but that's just based on very vague faded memories. Good luck.
