I think most who would leave have already left.

I can get out of lemmy what I got out of reddit a long time ago. It only takes a few hundred smart/funny people to make a chat board good. We're here now. Hopefully some of the niche communities get ported over soon enough, but the real greatness of reddit was that it was mostly uncensored and intelligent opinion. That's mostly dead.

Only in some communities it was..

And, the lack of censorship wasn't a good thing. It allowed absolute shtshow's like thedonald or fatpeoplehate to exist way too long. There were also numerous pedo subreddits too which were allowed to exist apparently.

I'd argue that Reddit is at least partially responsible for a lot of f'ed up shit that many countries are now facing, by empowering those weirdos

i think FB has reddit beat, FB resulted in more conflicts than reddit ever did.

The problem with reddit very specifically is that it was, in many ways, internet counterculture. It grabbed a very specific demographic which is much less likely to be active on Facebook - young men stepping out from their edgy teenager "it's not a stage mom" stage, and into the throes of early adulthood. So now you have this very strange thing where "youth counterculture" is sometimes (often enough to be a problem) this unholy marriage between fascist nihilism and Christian nationalism.

Absolutely true

In fact, here in Australia, someone has now introduced legislation in parliament to force social media companies to provide a feed without the algorithm / only posts by people you subscribe to

Of course the right wing nut jobs don't like the legislation, because they rely on scare mongering and rage bait to exist

That's why you know it's great legislation

And some of them upon arriving here, noped out (either immediately or waiting a few years first) and went back:-(.

That type definitely will not be so eager to return.

It does not help that people here can be INSANELY aggressive against each other.

[–] Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 hours ago

The fuck you on about, scum?

[–] Goforce5@lemmy.world 14 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Brother, early reddit was a fucking war zone lol. I swear, I learned more grammar from outright shame than I ever did in school.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Same. Kongregate essentialy shammed me one comment at a time into having a somewhat decent grammar.

Especially from hexbear, which not every instance defederates from.

Though I've also seen more than a few people so proud at their choice to flaunt pushing past consent, from Lemmy.ml.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Wait, people on Lemmy.ml do what!?!

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 6 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

When hexbear.net and Lemmygrad.ml are defederated, then nearly 100% of the time the most batshit insane replies I see are from Lemmy.ml.

Echo chambers do horrible things to people:-(.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

i think there are more lemmy.ml users than the other 2 tankie instances.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

Am just glad I blocked them all..
