August Willich emigrated to the US for the purpose of fighting the confederates. He had previously given up his noble title, fought in the 1848 revolution and challenged Marx to a duel for being a fucking lib. He left the Union army after the New York Times called him Dutch, after which he briefly returned to Europe to finally read Hegel at the age of 60.
The first tankie, the first guy to call all other communists than himself a lib, fought against slavery.
