I'm trying to get through the first one, but the story is so cringy, worse than the original. Does it get better in part 2?
I wouldn't say so. It doesn't sound like you're kind of thing.
Personally, I played so many JRPGs in the 90s and 00s that I burnt out. If I didn't have nostalgia for the original, I probably couldn't play through these remakes. Some of the quest design is just straight up busywork.
I played the original for months, and I know it is cheezy, but the storyline with Jessie feels like a filler to pad out the episode.
Not saying you're wrong, but my take was it was depth they wanted to add to give weight to later scenes but couldn't in the original for space and time reasons. I have no evidence to back that up.
I was so excited for the remake until I started playing it... Maybe one day they will just remaster the original.
It's probably an acquired taste at this point. I definitely understand why it's cringy, but I was a big fan of the original and when you got to read everything in your own internal voice, the context was a bit cleaner. JRPGs generally put Japan's culture and tendencies first, so it can be alienating when you don't get to fill in some blanks yourself. Assuming you're western.
