Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Just picked up a PC, curious what distro I should pick (hexbear.net)

got a great deal at an estate sale, i9-9900k, 32gb ddr4, rtx 2070 for $350.

I started with debian but unfortunately it's an Nvidia card. the big thing I want to try with this thing is emulating bloodborne, and maybe local AI models so performance is key.

will I be fine with debian or are the packages just too old?

edit: lmao debian wouldn't boot or even successfully launch the terminal in recovery mode after installing the nvidia drivers so fuck that I switched to kubuntu since it's what I have experience with it worked as expected beep boop bop. thank you for your suggestions everyone!

this is my first time with a prebuilt and it's weird working with someone else's HW choices. ugh the RAM rgb can't be switched off I might try to mod it.

That's not normal, Debian works fine with NVIDIA cards including with their proprietary drivers. You can follow https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

How do I know? Been running such a setup for years including for gaming, even VR gaming, and tinkering with local AI models for evaluation (and disappointment) and works well.

oh yeah I know it's not normal. there was something about a "kernel error (bug)" and failing to interpret a BIOS symbol, and also ACPI errors that may or may not be related. the hardware is kinda old, it's a z390 taichi motherboard. the 1st m.2 slot failed on me during the first installation attempt and I had to go to a backup so obv it's not in the best shape. I figure I'll worry about a clean (canonical free) distro when I can also be free of nvidia. for now It's just bloodborne :3 time unless I gotta upgrade the card right away, 8gb VRAM is kinda rough.
