Welcome to libre

A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.

The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.

Resources

  1. Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
  2. Switch to GNU/Linux! If you're still using Windows in $CURRENT_YEAR, try a GNU/Linux distribution.

Rules

  1. Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn't mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
  2. Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here's a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
  3. Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
  4. All site-wide rules still apply

Which one is this? Xlibre? Yeah theyre fash

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Then what fash jacketing are you talking about?

The guy that replied to Antoine Le Gonidec. Antoine also says llms are a 'fascist backed technology' which implies anyone that uses them are fascist sympathizers. He also said Debian was becoming a Nazi bar.

The reality is that LLMs are tools. It doesn't even matter if a fascist made a tool if you are able to expropriate that tool (e.g. open weights models, picking up a Luger to shoot a Nazi doesn't make you a Nazi).

llms are a 'fascist backed technology'

That's a factual statement.

[–] lurkerlady@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do you think China is fascist? They also back LLMs.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You are unfairly characterizing Antoine's behavior as fash jacketing.

You didn't answer the question. What I am saying is it is nonsensical to say something is 'fascist backed' unless you are taking a moralizing stance on a technology as a whole. Banning all LLMs is clearly bad imo, but it makes sense to care about the origin of an LLM.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Banning all LLMs and discussing acceptable exceptions is how a community could actually end up with a culture of responsible LLM use.

[–] lurkerlady@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That is categorically not banning all LLMs, though. And again, do you think China is fascist?

People are acting real fucking weird about LLMs in leftist spaces and even in general, yeah I get it a lot about it is gross as hell but I think we can afford ourselves a bit of nuance here as a treat.
