Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Just picked up a PC, curious what distro I should pick (hexbear.net)

got a great deal at an estate sale, i9-9900k, 32gb ddr4, rtx 2070 for $350.

I started with debian but unfortunately it's an Nvidia card. the big thing I want to try with this thing is emulating bloodborne, and maybe local AI models so performance is key.

will I be fine with debian or are the packages just too old?

edit: lmao debian wouldn't boot or even successfully launch the terminal in recovery mode after installing the nvidia drivers so fuck that I switched to kubuntu since it's what I have experience with it worked as expected beep boop bop. thank you for your suggestions everyone!

this is my first time with a prebuilt and it's weird working with someone else's HW choices. ugh the RAM rgb can't be switched off I might try to mod it.

Zorin OS is a good first option. Everything Just WorksTM

Don't recommend niche distros to beginners, these have next to no community support and tend to disappear overnight

Zorin IS is derived from Ubuntu - 99% of Ubuntu's guide will work with it.

You know this because you use it. The person for whom this is their first Linux doesn't. Why not recommend Ubuntu or Mint?
