The old floor is a complicated piece of art!
And it looked like old and busy butt. I would put laminate over it too. Those triangle filler pieces from trying to put square pegs in round holes are straight fucking awful ๐คฎ.
Laminate does have the benefit of being easier to repair and clean after flooding. Especially when you live in a garden level (half underground) and it won't stop fucking raining. Wood loves soaking up water.
It was recommended to me in Indiana as a better investment than hardwood for that reason. Basically our weather and humidity is too variable and the work for maintaining hardwood isn't worth it to most people.
