What they mean is ~~you'll get~~ they got more selfish as ~~you get~~ they got older.
Some day their choice to reproduce will be taken away from them and taking their choices away is bad. So it's better to exercise that choice before it's till late and to help with the consequences.

Tbf, at least in America, it's a very very expensive and tedious process to go the adoption route. Raw dogging is free.
