Mild spoilers for Tunic:

There's a point midway through the game where [things change] and you can't leave unless you go through a difficult church 'dungeon'/graveyard area.

Well its topped off by requiring you to go through an enemy wave gauntlet with no checkpoints.

I very nearly stepped away from the game forever because of that section.

Do you mean the gauntlet that gets you your new teleport ability? That was definitely hard but not much unlike other fights, I actually liked you could select the order of those 6 fights.

The graveyard before that though, yeah, was a bitch until I realised you can actually damage those invisible ghosts hunting you.
