I never understood why they burned witches but now I see how that would be a satisfying conclusion to some events.

Why? They were well-read women, aka "woke women" so they "sent a message" (don't mess with the patriarchy). Also, King James, his Witch General Finders, and the "demonologists" were all men, and they found women an easier target to do bad things too. They argued that "their feminine wiles" misled many men; therefore, they're in cahoots with the dark side.
