To add to this: there were deliberate choices to make male characters suffer in the same way female characters often experienced.

How would you make the manliest man who ever manned truly uncomfortable in a theater in 1979? They're used to blood and guts on screen. But what about a violent, nonconsensual pregnancy?

That's a good point

I recall reading that the "Facehugger" scene was unrehearsed/the actors weren't informed so their concern and terror was real
