For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Belle de Jour (1967), a French surrealist drama from renowned auteur Luis Bunuel, whose work has appeared numerous times on the ‘tube, most recently with the Mexican youth drama The Young and the Damned (1950). A bored, repressed housewife (Catherine Deneuve) decides to spice up her wife by becoming a high-class prostitute, a job that quickly sends her into a delusional haze of sex and violence in which she can no longer tell what is real and what is not. Many reviews read feminist and lesbian themes into the film, and many also compare it to the likes of Pasolini’s Theorem (1968) and Godard’s Vivre Sa Vie (1962). This is one of Bunuel’s most famous works, and one of the most acclaimed French films of the 60s, so we’ll give it a shot.

BONUS: Between the features, we will watch The Mole in the City (1982), a 28-minute Czechoslovak cartoon about the eponymous mole and his hedgehog and rabbit buddies, who must leave their forest homes for the city after urban development destroys their habitat. Uh-oh, turns out the city is a concrete hell, and they have to escape back into nature. This is the magnum opus of director Zdenek Miler, and one of the top-rated Eastern Bloc animations on Letterboxd.

After that is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (2026), an LGBT horror-comedy Director (2026), a horror-comedy that follows the meta-adventure of a young queer filmmaker directing the revival of a dormant 1980s horror series; she tracks down the original “final girl” of the series (played by Gillian Anderson) in her remote home, but things that start becoming strange from there as both women find themselves in the midst of a real slasher movie, all the while becoming attracted to each other. Jane Schoenbrun also did the LGBT horror I Saw the TV Glow (2024), which we previously watched. Excellent reviews across the board for this one, so let’s check it out. We will be watching a camrip, but it appears to be of good quality.
