Remember. Our Constitution was designed by people who were already at the very top of the American social hierarchy at the time. The Founding Fathers were composed of an odd alliance of Northern merchants and media moguls and Southern plantation owners. These people fundamentally did not want society to change; they were already at the top of it. In their writings they were explicitly fearful of direct democracy, or "the mob" as they would have called it.
Our Constitution was deliberately designed to make using the federal government as a tool of profound social transformation extremely difficult. It has many anti-democratic mechanims built in.
It's just an incredibly brittle system that cannot meet the needs of the nation. Wealth inequality is out of control. Captured regulatory regimes both suppress new competition and under-regulate the national monopolies. I could go on all day. Our government is simply structurally incapable of meeting the needs of the nation.
And yes, you have the right idea. A lot of the paths to reform are cut off or captured by wealthy interests. The wealthy want many different things, but the one commonality that nearly all the super rich do not support is using the federal government as a tool of mass wealth redistribution.
