One of the unexpected perks of living somewhere where public transit actually exists is that even in cases where I have been in a car, it feels like people are a bit more sane. People who really don't want to be on the road don't have to be. Down South (in the US), it's like, even if you get your license revoked, you still gotta get to work somehow, and it's so car dependent, what are you gonna do? That's to say nothing of the reduction in traffic. The fact that public transportation makes such a big difference even for people who drive everywhere makes it so much more ridiculous that it's so sparse and underfunded.
