In an effort to only be a little annoying, some wines in the US have ranked higher in blind tests when compared with French wines. Albeit it’s an old story nowadays, but France doesn’t have a monopoly on good wine, nor Italy on good ‘pizza’.
Something we, the people in the US, do right, is integrating different cultural foods and ingredients. There’s a mountain of things that can be said about just how long something of higher quality actually lasts here, but many of us are eager to try new things and see the local places near us as part of our home.
that’s not a useful metric though. the science of winemaking isn’t some dark secret. given enough money to replicate conditions i’m sure even saudi arabia could produce a wine that blind tests better than french wines
the point of comparing regions is their average wine: pick up a random wine off the shelf from each region and how comparable is it?
french wine isn’t good by magic - french wine is good for the same reason french pastry, bread, and cheese are also good. because it’s deeply ingrained in french culture that these are things that you don’t accept bad versions of. bad wine doesn’t sell in france. americans are less picky. each wine region adapts to local conditions
I think you can do random wine comparisons from various regions, but comparing the average wine across all of America hardly seems like a fair comparison though given how much bigger America is compared to France. A better comparison would be the average wine in western Europe compared to the average American wine if we’re going off of sheer scale.
Some states have better wine producing areas than others due to the climate. The East Coast for instance doesn’t have as good of a climate for wine production as the West Coast, that’s not a flaw really but a regional difference. The wines that are produced on the East Coast aren’t bad, but even when I asked a couple sommeliers while on the East Coast they conveyed that I would find much better wines on the West Coast due to the climate.
