You always want to take POWs to encourage future surrenders. An enemy that knows they can surrender and be treated as well, if not better, than their own military is much more likely to surrender than to risk their life.
How are the Russian soldiers going to act if they know the foreign mercenaries they are fighting next to will get a trip home while they will not?
Now Ukrainian soldiers know they are going to be killed if captured so why would they not extend the same to the Russian soldiers instead of wasting resources taking them prisoner?
I know it is the right thing to do but when your foe is doing their worse to you, how long can you keep up doing your best for them?
