MKBHD is a tech youtuber (maybe the biggest?) who normally uses a Mac, but he got a Framework 13 Pro with Ubuntu and has been using it for a few weeks now.

Putting aside my opinions about Framework and their nazi-enveloping tent, I think this is good news and could help get more Linux users. North America already has 10% linux market share. If more youtubers keep talking about it, we could see another jump.

And if you have a YouTube account, you can also ask MKBHD to join the fediverse. Now that he's on Linux, it's the next logical step!

Framework and their nazi-enveloping tent

Can someone kindly explain this part or send a reference? I’ve missed this one.

give (gave?) money to omarchy

From my understanding, they donated a laptop to DHH, and when the community discovered it, Framework told everyone they are a "big tent", angering a lot of people (who are mad that FW is okay with financing individuals who want them and/or others dead)

I believe most people are angry about Framework's response to the whole ordeal, if Nirav apologised instead of holding his ground I don't think it would've been as controversial.

Yeah, I conflated it with the hyperland funding from the same thread

The big tent pitch was weaselly and weak. I assume they were actually unaware of his politics when they gave him the social media plug. But NRP doubled-down indicating it was his preferred distro for "productivity" in that thread.

I'm not sure why they would send a multimillionaire hardware when he spends his own money on much more expensive things.

Ah okay, thanks!

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 1 points 5 days ago

They donated to a bunch of different Linux projects. A few were run by shitty people, notably hyperland. They didn’t really handle the discussion about it well.

[–] krimson@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The fuck is wrong with framework now then. Nazi what? I have no idea.

Everytime I see a nice new product show up it is nazi this nazi that. Getting fucking tired of it.

Also I seriously doubt the 10% statistic. Id expect it to still be around 3-4%-ish. Stats are probably skewed by AI agents scraping the internet.

I responded to another comment with a more thorough explanation if you're interested.

But they gave money to Omarchy, DHH project, and he has become extremely right-wing.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I think they gave him a Framework laptop so that he could ensure Omarchy works well on it, not money, right?

[–] sbeak@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

The main issue most people have is Framework's response, they claimed they were a "big tent" that accepted people like DHH, and there was a lot of promotion of Omarchy on Framework's social media as well.

Instead of apologising, he didn't budge.

I still think FW is better than the other companies though (Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP especially, etc.), as they probably support plenty of equally horrible people. Most of them are also close to authoritarian leaders who don't have a very good human rights track record.

There aren't many good alternatives to Framework unfortunately, aside from buying used machines and more niche companies like System76, Tuxedo Computers, and Slimbook.

I do know that System76 recently released a Panther Lake device with competitive battery life, but it doesn't have upgradeable memory (it's a fixed 32GB for everyone, so at least it's not soldered 8GB, but that also means it's pretty expensive). It looks pretty interesting, and hopefully there will be more reviews comparing it to the FW13 Pro!

[–] Botzo@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You might be right. They were (are?) funding hyprland to the tune of 600/mo. They definitely donated hardware and provided first hand social media promoting Omarchy.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And Hyprland isn't otherwise controversial, right, other than being picked by DHH to use in Omarchy?

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hyprland is also somewhat controversial if I'm not mistaken but not like DHH or omarchy. The people running the project have had some shitty transphobic takes and generally been poorly socialized asshats at certain points or something like that. But not overt Nazis, just ignorant and shitty at times. I dunno what ended up happening with any of those issues, from what I heard they were most loudly a thing a while ago now (I don't use a standalone window manager and really haven't followed things)

Hopefully someone can add some more context, but you should be able to research the stuff with hyprland and decide how that does or doesnt inform your choices, I think info about it should be relatively easy to find

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Haha, I'm mainly asking to ensure we're spreading correct information here - I'm not interested in Hyprland for other reasons already :) Thanks!

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Gotcha!

Hope you have a lovely day ☺️

Huh what about nazis? I knew Linus had a lot of money invested

[–] jlow@slrpnk.net 6 points 6 days ago

Nice, also came here to remind everyone that Framework loves everyone including nazis (which is how you get a fascist country).

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Now that he’s on Linux, it’s the next logical step!

huh in what way is he now on Linux? He's firmly a macOS user.

Edit: whoops, thought we were on the DHH train here. Nevermind me just shitting on shitty people (like DHH).
