For the past several days, it has nearly impossible to upload an image via the Voyager app on iOS using my lemmy.world account.

Every now and then, an image gets through. And uploading using the website works every time, so I don’t know what the problem is.

I’m not factory resetting my phone to fix what is an app-level issue.

I wasn't suggesting you try, just that I had the same issue that went away after a factory reset that was needed due to a host of issues that my phone was having after 5 years of use and several Android version upgrades.

My solution was the workaround of drilling down one level deeper into the file system (via the 3 dot menu) and selecting a photo from there. That method worked fine for me as its not like I'm uploading pictures here very often.

The iOS app does not have this. Photos can only be added to a comment using the photo picker.

On iOS, you can either use a photo from the camera app or an image in the Files app (something that was added to the phone as a document). But the Files app does not have access to the photos that are part of the camera roll. And the camera roll doesn’t have access to files.

(The first two images in this comment were added using the Voyager app without any issue. The third image failed repeatedly. I logged into lemmy.world using the vger.app website and the third image uploaded without any problems.)
