If your job is to do shit for a corporation sure. But if you're doing work that is going to impact regular people then you should at minimum get them what they've paid for. It's not their fault you're underpaid.

And yet nurses, first responders, therapist, social workers, and teachers are all expected to take the satisfaction of helping people as compensation in lue of payment.

I would expect them to not do the job at all if they're not being compensated suffiently. If there's no one to work their employer cannot charge customers for work that won't be done.
