anime, manga and pokemon are a lot darker than you imply here, with extreme issues in both their production and treatment of workers - as well as their content including SA, pedophilia and other disturbing trends at extremely high rates even in mainstream and popular products. One might even make the case that this is the unique appeal of anime that has so enraptured the west.

why, some of us do make that argument, and have noticed similarities in our recent love of korean media. there were a few years there in the 2000s that made it look like problematic indian media was going to take up the mantle, so that probably deserves a special mention, even if korea eventually eclipsed them.
