This is one of the reasons I liked guild wars (1 and 2). They didn't do the gear grind. They added one tiny equipment tier early on in the game's life, and never again in ten years. They add different stat spreads, but that's it. (Ok, and infusions, which are like a single percentage point of stats.)
Yeah I love that GW2 doesn't do vertical progression. I'm a casual player and kitted out my characters many years ago, and since then - unless I want to try out a new build - I don't have to touch them again.
GW was my jam back in the day. I couldn't get GW2 to click for me because by the time I got into it, it was information overload and I found it hard to keep up. However, GW3 is going to be a no brainer buy when it releases.
