This feels like it would be a little Mary-Sue to me, but I haven’t read the book. Is that transition handled well?
I found it a bit of a stretch that a cranky technophobe English professor could, or even would bother to, create an algorithm the whole world of math and computer nerds overlooked. But I don't let preposterous characters get in the way of my big-ideas SF when I can help it.
