On one hand, the optimist inside me thinks this might be a bulwark against imperialism, colour revolutions, and possibly an attempt at creating a dictatorship of the proletariat.

On the other, the pessimist in me thinks this is a very old man and his wife who should have chosen (or held elections for) a successor many years ago and are clinging to power all the while making a mockery of a socialist movement.

Maybe it's a bit of column A, bit of column B. I don't know enough about Nicaragua to pass judgment.

Thoughts?

I am pretty ignorant about Central America so take this with a grain of salt, but I think that given recent events in Venezuela and Bolivia it was gonna have to come to something like this. His gov has been under threat from the liberal opposition for a while now and he has no successor as you said. I don't think his party really has a lot of passionate support anymore so I don't know if this is gonna go well, but he probably feels he has to take the gamble.
