It’s been around since Ancient Rome. They didn’t call it psychology, but where they put the Flavian Arena (aka. “The Colliseum”) is done to increase patronage. Additionally, stoking the crowd to foment an opinion agreeable to the State (e.g. the Emperor in Ancient Rome) was strong using theatrics.
