they aren't that bright and will absolutely eat more than they can handle if given the chance

Second this. Had a cat that learned how to open cabinets. He found his dry food and ate everything. All of it until he had a bowel obstruction.

And even then, at the vet, he very willingly gobbled down his medication.

He's not alive anymore but he was a very special cat. Very hungry and very jealous. He wanted all! :D
