You see a lot of Canadian sports sort of moving away from the USA, as they should, with the establishment of the Canadian Premier League, Canadian Baseball League and the Canadian Elite Basketball League. So why isn't there a similar thing happening with hockey? Hockey is in a bad place in Canada, and I think that the NHL is hurting the sport in the long run. A Canadian Hockey League also wouldn't be so expensive as the NHL, so there can be teams in cities like Halifax and Saskatoon that wouldn't be able to afford an NHL team.

I think that the MLS, NBA and MLB show that North American leagues can coexist with domestic Canadian leagues, so why not for hockey?

The CHL exists (it comprises of the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey league, and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League).

Somehow there are still nine US teams in the CHL, including five teams from Washington State. The QMJHL is actually the only league in the CHL that doesn't have American teams.
