I would say his understanding of Marxism is seeing all the fearmongering about "evil commies" and then just thinking that it is actually great and wants to build an oppressive regime just like how communism is portrayed to the average American.
It reminds me of Michael Koth, a German Nazbol who supports the DPRK and Juche Idea seemingly because he looked at all the "literally 1986" propaganda against Korea and thought that was based.
Nazbols and Patsocs are fundamentally the same thing, so I'm not surprised.
