Isn't... isn't what what the ICC is for?

[–] variaatio@nord.pub 14 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

The EU proposal actually talks about this. ICC has no jurisdiction over Crime of Agression. Actual starting of the war. Since by accident/intentionally nobody gave ICC that jurisdiction/ Russia is hardly going to volunteer to agree to give it jurisdiction

ICC can handle the individual war crimes, crimes against humanity.

wait hold up. that explains so much of US military doctrine over the past my entire life.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 3 points 17 hours ago

I see. Makes sense setting aside the low-hanging fruit of "what about America and Israel."

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 48 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Correct, and the ICC is in The Hague, which is in the Netherlands. So this is just confirmation that they are willing to carry out the necessary surrounding logistics for such a big tribunal against a powerful head of state.

.... And as the other comment said, I really would like to see Trump and Netanyahu right next to Putin.

According to american law they will invade us if any american is being charged by the ICC..

[–] 0x0@infosec.pub 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

This is one of the things any subsequent President could do to help restore international relations after this shit show.

Repeal the Hague Invasion Act, re-sign the Rome Statute and submit it to the Senate for ratification as we should have done in the first place. It was signed under Clinton originally and the Hague Invasion Act was passed under Bush after 9/11.

Allowing international oversight of war crimes tribunals against the US military would go a long way to help fix relations.

an act like β€œwe will invade if you charge any of us with warcrimes” is so obviously β€œwe do war crimes…” lol. i hate this country

[–] Ertain@mast.linuxgamecast.com 1 points 19 hours ago

@Wrufieotnak I would like to see Trump next to them, too.

While most of Russia's war crimes can be prosecuted in other courts, there is no legal entity authorized to rule on the crime of aggression β€” first coined to prosecute the Nazis for World War II β€” which means a dedicated tribunal needed to be established.
