People who get pissy off of pineapple on pizza are so corny. It's like level 1 controversy types of foods. We got countries putting spaghetti and squid on pizza.
The most "normal" thing on pizza I don't like is corn. I like corn in general but I don't want it on my pizza (although not enough to not eat the slice if someone hands it to me).
But then again Japan puts a lot of odd things on pizza, like canned tuna and dollops of potato salad.
As far as I can tell, people mostly complain on the internet. IRL it's always on the menu and nobody comments about it.
One time I ordered a pineapple pizza at a cafe/game store with a room where we were staying the night. The person taking my order gave me shit for it when I ordered, after the group ordered, and when they brought out the food.
Not playful banter or little jokes, just legitimately talking about how gross my order was. Chicken & pineapple pizza for reference, I think it was even a named special on the menu.
All that to say, they exist and they are just as infuriating IRL.
Pizzas are like burgers, tacos, and salads to me. I've had enough "fusion" food to know they're just vehicles to deliver the toppings you enjoy. The skys the limit IMO, go nuts there's no rules, do it however you like.
I'm convinced it was never the pineapple which set off their distaste, but rather the shitty ham that comes on hawaiian pizza from some chains.
The shitty ham certainly did not help. Picking off the pineapple left sad in it’s place.
The pineapple being hot alters the taste a bit. I like Hawaii pizza, but if I make it at home I put room temp pineapple on it after baking instead of baking it with the pizza because I want the tanginess more than the sweetness.
I have a bigger problem with putting tomato slices on pizzas. They are mostly water so they not only shrivel down to sad little strips but they leave the pizza soggy.
you don't cook the pizza with slices on it. the go on after, or you used pre-cooked/dried tomatoes
cold sliced roma and fresh basil is pretty great on a pizza.
I think this is the crux of my issue. I’m not a big fan of pineapple in general but if it’s paired and made well it can taste good. I’m not always in the mood for it but I’ve mostly learned to order pizza that is difficult to screw up. Similarly, the only times I’ve ordered a pizza with tomato slices they put the tomato and herbs on it before blasting the fuck out of it in the pizza oven so I just don’t order that anymore. You are correct however, I’ve made my own at home and it’s drastically different/better. I just usually don’t want pizza enough to make one. If I’m making pizza it’s for a group.
