Alright. Theory time. Who's got a good conspiracy for why she's already holding the balloon?
My theory: She selected the balloon elsewhere in the store, and brought it to the checkout counter. Rather than being a request for the balloon itself, I posit that the purpose of her proclamation is to inform the store clerk what item to ring up, and in turn how much change (if any) she should receive.
That's a good theory
It is her money, or perhaps a coinpurse, not the baloon.
I think it's a metaphor for the futility of life
