If I were to guess... a bunch of artists produced clipart for the book and someone fit it together. Science and stuff. Page layouts get amusing frequently (sometimes intentionally...)

As far as the content of the text goes... its good advice. Some things we take for granted are not always well known. Tsunamis are terrifying and nature plays for keeps... (example) and loves to remind us of how powerless we can be. (animated example)

We can certainly laugh and call it common sense - but really, unless you start moving the second an early warning hits - you may well just be a statistic simply based on your relative location to the event.
