"Transgender, gender-nonconfirming, and nonbinary New Yorkers deserve age-appropriate health care that is affirming, respectful, and considerate of all their needs. That’s why, for the first time later this summer, the NYC Health Department will be expanding services to provide gender affirming hormone therapy to adults 19 years of age and older at our Corona Sexual Health Clinic. As with the other clinic services, gender-affirming hormone therapy will be offered at no to low cost and regardless of immigration status. Commissioner Alister Martin: “It’s incredibly important that we get the messaging right here and that we lean in on the comms and the campaign here, but it’s also important to deliver for people and to provide the services they need. And we’re excited to say that pretty soon we’re going to be able to offer gender-affirming care directly at our clinics. We have a clinic that will be opening up in Corona which will offer gender-affirming hormone therapy for adults. It’s like one of the first times a public health department has ever taken that step, and we’re proud to not just stop there. We’ll continue moving forward with this.”
Councilmember Tiffany Cabán: “Can I ask a follow-up on that? Particularly because that’s a really big deal, but also—we’re seeing this devastating decrease in services for youth, and especially youth under 13, 12—like, there are almost no providers who provide that care. And the one or two that do is obviously under attack from the federal government. So is there going to—are you thinking about an expansion in that youth care? Because I’m talking to parents all the time and they don’t know where to take their children.”
Commissioner Martin: “As you can appreciate, the balance that we have to strike is—we are committed to this issue and want to make sure that we provide the services and resources for youth, as well as making sure that we don’t expose ourselves to clawbacks from the federal government, which disrupt the rest of the care that we can give. And so there’s much more to come on this, trying to sort of figure out that right balance. We’re eager to work with you on this, but rest assured we are working on this and we’re trying to figure out how to do this.”

and there it is, the moment we've all been waiting for, when politics sacrifices the most vulnerable amoung us...
it is disappointing, for many reasons ... I hope they push back on the executive order in other ways, but I worry that this signals that the NY attorney general is less likely to enforce NY laws about this ... since, the new clinic would clearly be in violation of anti-discrimination laws written to protect access to this care in particular.
I understand not wanting to threaten access to care for adults, but the executive order is not a law and shouldn't be treated that way, meanwhile NY has actual laws to prevent this kind of discrimination - so in some sense they are choosing illegal discrimination out of fear of retribution for an order that doesn't carry the legal weight it claims to ... not unlike Trump's other illegal executive orders which attempted to end birth-right citizenship and other absurdities - we shouldn't give those executive orders power by respecting them, but I understand that may not be the most pragmatic path.
The unfortunate reality is that not having that policy would mean 80% of their funding would go to legal defense for lawsuits from aggrieved right wing parents who have outside funding for their suits.
Until the laws state clearly that minors can make their own medical decisions independent of their parents, this is the correct decision. And even in that case this clinic would still be under attack.
Reality still sucks, and we still need to keep trying to make it better. Mamdani is a ray of hope, but he isn't in and of himself hope incarnate, nor is he a perfect ray of light.
He's just human. So are we. He's trying to make things better, and so can we.
This is literally how most of the crimes of the Holocaust happened. Remember that whole "first they came for..." poem? Ever wonder what people who don't speak up told themselves at night to sleep better? They said things like:

In each stage, people could tell themselves, "yes, I could speak up and do what little I can to fight this to protect this group, but I would be letting down all these other people if I tried to protect the targeted minority."
Fascists count on people not fighting back, to comply in advance. And the greatest way liberal enablers coddle fascists is by telling themselves that following the whims of the fascist will still be the greater good.
Humanizing inhumane laws was not in my bingo card this year.
I am identifying obstacles to making this clinic able to operate without being overrun by lawsuits.
I am not at all opposed to workarounds - it's why I am pointing out the obstacles. We need to update laws so that minors have bodily autonomy.
In my opinion, that's the legal solution. It doesn't mean there aren't other ways to make it work that Mamdani might embrace, because as a mayor he cannot enact that kind of legislation in the first place.
Lawsuits will occur regardless how Corona Sexual Health Clinic(CSHC) follow the law, because Americans are continuing their Fascist descent. Opposing fascism wherever it creeps up is humanitarian care. CSHC & NYC need to disobey fascist laws + demands, by force.
The only way facism ends is by killing it from the roots. And that start at making a pro-bono hospital for all in need of care, including our younger siblings.

So have the government pay for the organisation's legal defense by raising taxes on vacant properties in accordance to their value.

if it were really sacrificing us there wouldn't be a clinic at all... but i understand the frustration at compromise. like OP has already said, they could've stood firmer on the laws in place to protect us. but it's hardly sacrificing.

It's just a minority of a minority, what's some dead children in the name of political expediency?
they are directly harming trans children to avoid a hypothetical legal fight that they would win easily because the law is clearly and explicitly on the side of providing trans children gender affirming care. how many beards will be grown, how many breasts will be grown, how many skeletal structures will undergo the wrong puberty, all because we forced trans children to undergo the wrong puberty when they already know who they are, and the treatment is readily available and cheap? the sooner we transition the better our outcomes. this is just forcing trans children to acquire a whole suite of secondary sex characteristics that are much harder to change as an adult than if they had started hormonal transition as teenagers.
its not a fucking compromise, they're just rolling over.
