For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Limite (1931), a silent avant-garde Brazilian drama about two men and a woman who find themselves stranded in a tiny boat out in the middle of nowhere. The film intercuts their plight with a series of dreamlike, fragmented flashbacks that show how and why the three abandoned their previous lives. “Visual poetry” is a frequent descriptor for the film, being concerned more with aesthetics and mood than conventional plot. This is the only film of director Mario Pexoto, who was only 23 at time of release. I guess he had nowhere left to go after this early peak, since this is still regarded by critics as one of the greatest Brazilian films of all time.

BONUS: Between the features, we will watch Charlie Chaplin’s 22-minute slapstick short, which features his usual character, the Tramp, as a bricklayer who wants to avoid his domineering wife so he can waste all of his money drinking with his buddies. Hilarity ensues in Chaplin’s usual slapstick fashion, as his character becomes involved in all kinds of over-the-top antics. Considered one of his better shorts.

After that is Backrooms (2026), the brand-new blockbuster horror film based on the famed internet meme, originating from the 2022 Youtube short film of the same name. It follows a furniture store owner who goes through a mysterious portal that takes him into a dimensional wedgie consisting entirely of endless beige hallways. Will he get out? I guess we’ll see. Apparently the concept was inspired by going out-of-bounds in video game levels, and yeah, that sounds about right. Nice reviews for this one, at any rate; a good-quality camrip has just appeared, so let’s watch.. Director Kane Parsons, who also made the original Youtube video, is currently only 20 years old, being the youngest director ever (by a considerable margin) to make a #1 movie at the domestic box office. The Zoomers are taking over.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Be there, comrades!
