I liked Battle Chess back in the day because it had chess rules but made the capturing of squares more exciting.

So, at least it got a graphics upgrade after about 1500 years. But, I got tired of it because still, it's just chess. There's no random element, every game starts the same way. Other games like poker are also largely skill based games, but at least each game starts differently.
