How are you dealing with melting feet on old HP desktops? (midwest.social)

I cannot be the only one with old hardware... The feet on an old HP desktop melted. I now need to remove the residue from a wood shelf, a metal case, and a cotton t-shirt.

Any tips?

Also, check the feet of your oldest systems. Apparently they melt.

Thank you! That worked perfectly on the metal. The wood had some rubber get into the grain, but it worked pretty well. The shirt might be toast....

No worries, glad it could help!

As far as the wood is concerned, get a sheet of 240 grit sand paper and gently rub it with the grain of the wood, and give the edges a bit of gradient. Clean it out with a bit of that isopropyl afterward. If the finish is the same color or a hair darker than the sanded spot, rub a little mineral oil or beeswax into it to refinish. If it's significantly darker and you don't mind spending $20, watco danish oil is easy, fast, and durable.

I don't know a goddamn thing about fabrics, so I'm afraid I can't be of much more help on that front 😅

Thank you, I will have to try the wood repair.

Alcohol is also suggested for cleaning the shirt. It did not go well for me. Standard laundry detergent did not improve the situation. The shirt will be relegated to "not shirt".
