What's the chef cookin' tonight?

Squirrel and Hedgehog (Korean: 다람이와 고슴도치 Taramiwa Kosŭmdoch'i) is a popular animated TV series from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, with 32 episodes released between 1977 and 2012, and more episodes in the works as of 2025. Parts of Squirrel and Hedgehog were also dubbed with a greatly revised plot and released as Brave Soldier or Soldados Valientes in English and Spanish respectively. The series concerns the squirrels and hedgehogs of Flower Hill as they resolutely defend their homeland from invaders, hence the title. Tonight we'll be watching the last episodes before the 2000s/2010s "reboot".

  • Squirrel and Hedgehog: 130 minutes
    • Each episode is ~22 minutes
  • KCTV✪3SIS flourishes: 7 minutes

I do find it a little amusing comparing Squirrel and Hedgehog to PBS's animated adaptation of Redwall.

Redwall: Zooms into Mattimeo's face while he gets whipped.

Squirrel and Hedgehog: Squirrel gets rendered into ground meat from an explosion. ON SCREEN.

That scene alone has kept many DPRK children up at night. I guarantee it.

I do think Squirrel and Hedgehog has more depth to its themes though. Yeah, Redwall deals with war, but it's.... Well it is superficial isn't it?

Squirrel and Hedgehog doesn't not hold back. It goes through the consequences of being at war, and I respect the hell out of that.

Yeah. I'm not familiar with Redwall, though. It sounds interesting.

It's interesting but not something that "presses the right buttons" for me personally.

I went down the "Rats of NIMH" path myself.
